Utilizing coal resources to promote the development of power industry in Nigeria
According to the Nigerian Guardian, the Nigerian Solid Mineral Development Ministry has pointed out that the Nigerian federal government plans to use coal resources to promote electric power development is a step in the right direction, but only put into practice can produce practical significance. Since President Obasanjo's administration, the Nigerian people have been deceived many times by the government's promises of "improving the power industry", which makes the slogan of using coal resources to promote the power industry pale. Nigeria's current electricity supply has fallen to its worst level in years, and no one expects any miracles in Nigeria's electricity industry in the final year of President Obasanjo's administration.
President Obasanjo promised in 1999 to reform the NEPA, the current electricity holding company (PHCN), to increase Nepal's electricity generation from 3,000 megawatts to 10,000 megawatts in a year, 18 Months after the power supply to ensure uninterrupted. The Nigerian people have been happy. However, seven years later, the president's promises are frustrating and failing, the Nigerian power industry has not changed, even worse than imagined, even down to 2150 megawatts of generating capacity! This has nothing to do with the government's commitment to invest huge amounts of money into the power industry. For example, Nigeria imported transformer in 2000 up to 56 billion naira. There are also reports that the federal government from the foreign exchange reserves in the use of 3 billion US dollars for special power generation projects.
Nigeria's electricity supply will go from instability to loss, the country will be in the real darkness, in some areas less than three hours of electricity supply time. Such a hopeless situation forces generators to make heavy use of the high cost of misappropriating the revenue of many industries, the smoke emitted by the generator polluting the environment into an invisible killer, the industry running on the generator will be passed on the additional cost to the consumer.
Nigeria is rich in oil, natural gas and water resources, but also the use of wind and solar energy opportunities, coal resources is another real power resources available. NEPIC currently lacks engineering and intellectual capital, and the level of power industry management is low.
It is reported that Nigerian first discovered the coal mine in the Udi area near Enugu in 1909, and found coal mines in 14 states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigeria has developed into one of the richest countries in the world in coal resources. In 1950, Nigeria set up a coal company in Nigeria, coal mining in the Okpara and Onyeama areas only. By 1959, Nigeria's coal production increased from 583,487 tons to 905,397 tons. However, due to the small amount of production used in Nigeria's economy, coal production in Nigeria has declined sharply since the country's independence in 1960, particularly during the 1966-1970 civil war, when coal mining was completely stopped in Nigeria. Nigerian coal company since then in name only, its production activities shrinking, is currently awaiting privatization.
Reported that the Nigerian coal resources have not been used to generate electricity, no exports, and only make full use of this resource in order to Nigerian power industry to a new level. There is no doubt that the Nigerian government should solve the problem of electricity supply, without the availability of adequate energy supply is impossible to have real development, the Nigerian economy can not be entirely dependent on the generator.
Reportedly pointed out that at this critical moment in Nigeria's power industry reform what happened? The Nigerian parliament should speed up its action and take the necessary measures to break the monopoly of the Nigerian Electricity Holding Company (PHCN). Nigerian power industry should also be decentralized, the region should make full use of their energy resources to develop the power industry. Therefore, coal is the main resource for the development of electric power industry in some areas with rich coal resources.
